ABOUT

The Guam Department of Corrections (DEPCOR) is a government agency responsible for protecting the public from law offenders through control and rehabilitation, as wel as managing the island's correctional facilities. It provides general management for both convicted inmates and pre-trial detainees. 

Why Join? 

DEPCOR seeks to provide interns with practical experience and exposure to the fieldwork of Corrections and Criminal Justice. Interns should be prepared to work in the prison and jail systems with various populations who are suspected of committing a crime, have been adjudicated, and are serving time at GDOC's sites in Mangilao and Hagåtña. 

Interns will be treated and regarded as Staff-In-Training and will be expected to comply with all policies and procedures, best practices, and safety measures. 

As An Intern You Will: 

  • Shadow corrections staff
  • Participate in staff and multi-disciplinary meetings
  • Conduct initial interviews / screening 
  • Assist in report writing

Interns will be exposed to all areas of the department and then a specific area of interest (i.e. casework, security, program and policy, etc.) will be determined and agreed upon within the first 30 days of the internship. Safety is a priority for all and interns will be trained accordingly on safety measures.

  • Strong interest in criminal justice and rehabilitation

  • Observant, good written and verbal communication skills
  • Open to learning new skill sets and knowledge in the corrections and criminal justice fields 

You Can Gain: 

  • Practical experience to various knowledge and skills in the field of Corrections and Criminal Justice, including Security, Casework and Counseling, Programs and Policy, and Parole Services
  • Skills and training in Corrections fieldwork – developing strategies for improving correctional programs, conflict resolution, negotiation, policy and program development, etc. 
  • Internship hours for course credit upon review and approval of appropriate internship course professor
